Sinopse:
Manfredi, an habitual user of opium, is a piano player in a Chinese café. A wealthy tourist becomes interested in the young musician and sends him abroad to study. He promises Zuletta, his common law wife, that on his return he will marry her. Five years later he comes back, still addicted to the drug. Under its spell he is proclaimed a genius. Failing to make good his promise to Zuletta, he becomes infatuated with Margery Rhodes, a society girl, who comes to study music with him. So strongly is Margery influenced by her teacher, that she also acquires a taste for opium. John Hale, her lover, is in the secret service. Through the revengeful Zuletta, he learns that Manfredi conducts an opium joint. Hale has the place raided, just in time to save Mergery from a fate worse than death.

One of the earliest of the "psychological" crime yarns, Outside the Law stars Priscilla Dean as "Silk Moll" Madden, daughter of ex-crook "Silent" Madden (Ralph Lewis). Moll has tried to remain honest, like her reformed father. But when Silent Madden is framed for a shooting and sent to jail, Moll assumes he's guilty and reverts to a life of crime. She falls in with jewel thief "Black Mike" Sylva (Lon Chaney Sr.), who, unbeknownst to her, is responsible for railroading her father. When she learns the truth about Black Mike, Moll and another disillusioned crook, "Dapper Bill" Ballard (Wheeler Oakman), skip with a cache of stolen jewels and hide out somewhere in San Francisco. The climax is a tricky bit of camera legerdemain, wherein Black Mike is killed by a Chinese cohort-also played by Lon Chaney Sr. Co-written by director Tod Browning and Lucien Hubbard, Outside the Law was remade as a talkie in 1930, again directed by Browning and starring Edward G. Robinson in the Chaney role.

Although his murdered friend was by all accounts a scoundrel a true "bounder" Edward Wales is determined to trap his killer by staging a seance using a famous medium. Many of the 13 seance participants had a reason and a means to kill, and one of them uses the cover of darkness to kill again. When someone close to the medium is suspected she turns detective, in the hope of uncovering the true murderer.

Sinopse:
Após o misterioso assassinato de Sir Karell, foi sustentada a tese de que um vampiro o matou, pois lhe faltava sangue e marcas haviam em seu pescoço. Logo, se descobre que um castelo próximo foi alugado, e que a assinatura do contrato é a mesma de Sir Karrell (já falecido). Após ataques à Irena, filha de Sir Karrell e única herdeira da fortuna, eles desvendam que o Conde Mora (Bela Lugosi) e sua filha estão no castelo, e Sir Karrell também é um vampiro assim como eles.

London After Midnight, de 1927, é considerado o primeiro filme norte-americano tendo o vampirismo como tema. Na verdade, ele foi precedido de outros dois: The Vampire, de 1913; e A Village Vampire, de 1916. O problema é que estes dois filmes são curta-metragens (cada um têm aproximadamente 15 minutos de projeção) e foram feitos para serem exibidos em galerias de entretenimento, sendo, como outros filmes do gênero, desprezados pelos críticos e pelo público. De qualquer forma, os dois filmes eram inexpressivos demais e não fizeram frente ao clássico do diretor Tod Browning.London After Midnight é resultado de uma já ativa parceria do diretor Tod Browning com o ator Lon Chaney, que tinham trabalhado juntos em 1921, no filme de suspense Outside the Law, e em 1925, em The Unholy Three, ambos para os estúdios MGM. Browning e Chaney foram reunidos outra vez pela MGM (Chaney tinha retornado à Universal Pictures e realizado o clássico O Fantasma da Ópera, em 1925) para a produção de London After Midnight.
